While both types of eye exams evaluate your vision, they serve different purposes.
Routine Eye Exam
A Routine Eye Exam focuses on your vision and prescription needs. It includes:

Checking your vision and updating your glasses or contact lens prescription

Screening for common eye conditions

Assessing your overall eye health when no medical concerns are present
Comprehensive (Medical) Eye Exam
A Comprehensive Eye Exam is performed when there is a medical reason to evaluate your eyes or vision. In addition to checking your vision, your doctor will assess, diagnose, and manage eye diseases or medical conditions affecting your eyes. Comprehensive Eye Exams include dilation when necessary.
